Stephen has devoted nearly 30 years to education, working in highly regarded schools both internationally and in the UK. Prior to becoming Headmaster of The British School of Lisbon in August 2023, he served as Headmaster at Sherborne Senior School, Qatar, for seven years, and before that was Head of Secondary at Academia Británica Cuscatleca in El Salvador.
A first-class honours graduate, Stephen earned a BSc in Business Administration from the University of Wales, College of Cardiff. He completed his PGCE in Business Studies and Economics at the Institute of Education, University of London, and his NPQH at the National College for School Leadership in Nottingham. Before retraining as a teacher in his late twenties, he worked for five years in the publishing and research industries.
Stephen has built a track record of delivering outstanding results across all areas of school life. He has extensive expertise in leading, inspiring and developing teams, driving curriculum innovation, and continuously raising academic standards. A collaborative, resilient and emotionally intelligent leader, Stephen views school leadership not as a role, but as a privilege and a responsibility to support both staff and students in reaching their full potential.
Stephen is passionate about fostering a warm, inclusive and ambitious school community where every student is known, valued and encouraged to flourish. He says: “There is little more important in life than ensuring children, regardless of ability, enjoy their education, feel happy and safe and achieve their full potential. I feel extremely privileged to have made a career out of supporting and developing young people.”
Outside of school, Stephen enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, exploring different cultures, antiques, history and walking with his two rescue dogs.
