Radnor House Prep School

– A letter from the Head

Hello, I am delighted to introduce myself as Head of the new Radnor House Prep School, opening in September 2023. Having lived and worked in Richmond and Twickenham for over 20 years, I am very aware of the excellent reputation of Radnor House senior school. I am so excited to be given this opportunity and I look forward to working closely with parents, children, and the wider Dukes community to build upon Radnor’s established success…

I am very proud to be taking the school forward into its next chapter as a prep school for girls and boys aged 2-11. Education should provide the best preparation for next steps into senior school and life beyond, and in my view children should receive an education based on encouragement rather than pressure. The very best results come from a broad base, an interesting and challenging curriculum, and a strong and supportive network of parents, pupils and school.

We have the chance to create something new and exciting at Radnor House Prep School. But please be assured, the new prep school will be founded on the same core principles as the current senior school: courage, excellence, perseverance and respect, and those values will underpin everything we do. As a prep school, we will benefit from the wonderful riverside site, and the refit planned for summer 2023 will provide us with more outstanding resources for an exceptional educational experience. Our children will also have the chance to progress directly into Kneller Hall School, the new Dukes senior school opening in Twickenham in September 2023.

I look forward to welcoming parents to Radnor in the autumn term. Meanwhile, please register your interest so that we can keep in touch and update you on our progress as we move towards an exciting new future.

Best wishes,

Stephanie Piper

About
Radnor House Prep School

Radnor House Prep School is a new independent co-educational day school, opening in September 2023.  The school will educate and inspire girls and boys from ages 2-11, with four main entry points in Nursery, Reception, Year 3 and Year 5. The school will enjoy a stunning location on the banks of the River Thames in Twickenham, which is currently home to Radnor House Twickenham senior school.

Life at Radnor House will be shaped by the school’s commitment to providing an active learning environment for limitless minds. Everyone firmly believes that all pupils are capable of great things if effectively taught, motivated and inspired by their school environment. Pupils will thrive in small classes with a strong focus on individual attention. This vision is underpinned by four key values which are central to school life:

Resilience – encouraging a sense of balance and humour in dealing with mishap and failure, and encouraging pupils to use difficulties as learning opportunities.

Respect – teaching children to listen to others, to value and understand difference, and to show a respect of themselves and others.

Reflection – showing pupils how to make good judgements, to review what they know and learn, to evaluate and analyse success and failure with a view to growing potential.

Resolve – enabling pupils to have the courage to take a chance, to face a challenge with confidence.

Radnor House Prep School will welcome girls and boys aged 2-11 from September 2023.

The Pointer School

It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Pointer School, an independent co-educational school for boys and girls from 3-11 years of age. Being in the heart of London gives the school a breadth of character and personality that has been at the core of our educational philosophy for over 70 years.

We are very much a Christian school at our foundation. This is the compass we use to guide our pupils through the school, from being kind and compassionate individuals, to fully appreciating the wider world that we live in.

We proudly describe The Pointer School pupils as “self-confident and generous in spirit” and believe they will transition to senior school as young citizens ready to take on the world. We do this by giving the pupils opportunities to grow their self confidence and explore their interests. This starts in the school community, which is proudly international and diverse in makeup. It is evident in the curriculum, where lessons challenge our pupils and provide them with opportunities to take ownership of their learning. Outside of the classroom our extensive programme of extra-curricular clubs allows pupils to find and develop unique talents, from chess to robotics, dance to debating.

Our school is proof that it is possible to be highly academically ambitious without being selective. Children join us and are immediately immersed into a bespoke education with small class sizes (never over 20) and a focus on every child fulfilling their potential. We talk about finding the best senior school for each individual child, rather than simply funnelling them towards the "best" school based purely on league table results. Our pupils move on to a range of excellent independent and Grammar schools across the capital. As many as a quarter of our pupils gain prestigious scholarships for 11 plus entry.

At The Pointer School, we like to describe ourselves as a family. You will find us on the corner of the Heath, housed in Georgian and Victorian buildings with as much character as our school. You are warmly invited to visit, meet the family, and see our wonderful school for yourselves.

About
The Pointer School

Founded in 1950 by Muriel and Dela Pointer, The Pointer School has been educating children in Blackheath for over 70 years. The Pointer sisters ran “ThePointer Dance School” from the 1920s until the founding of the prep school on its current site.

Over the following years, The Pointer School has flourished and grown into a large successful Prep and Pre-Prep school, while still retaining its quirky character and Christian family ethos. The Pointer School pupils are instantly recognisable in their unique purple and green uniforms, and are well-known throughout Blackheath and Greenwich for their cheerful nature and kind hearts. We believe this is attributed to our outstanding of pastoral care.

All adults in our school, from teachers to playground assistants, work to create a loving and fun environment where children are taught to value mistakes and take pride in the accomplishments of themselves and others. Our pupils grow up with a sense of belonging and respect for the diverse world that we live in.

We place a strong emphasis on holistic education, with an extensive wraparound care programme, Holiday Clubs and camps, and over 50 extracurricular clubs, from gardening to coding.

At Pointers, school is so much more than just a classroom.

Devonshire House Preparatory School

Letter from the Head:

Devonshire House offers an intellectual, creative learning environment in which girls and boys of all character and learning profiles can thrive and maximise their potential.

We believe that parents shouldn’t have to choose between academically rigorous and pastorally nurturing schools: their children can have both at Devonshire House.

Strong core subject teaching is combined with a great breadth of study in specialist rooms and taught by expert teachers in their respective fields. A wide range of sports is on offer at our state-of-the-art facility and there is a keen focus on S.T.E.M, the creative arts, languages and the Humanities.

We encourage children to think critically by assimilating different perspectives with an open mindset, able to find nuanced positions as they wrestle with problems. We believe that learning and play represent a symbiotic relationship, one feeding the other.

Children learn as much from studying bugs in our wild area as they do in the classroom. The great outdoors are critical to a child’s development and at Devonshire House, we ensure that the children spend as much time outdoors as possible.

About
Devonshire House Preparatory School

Devonshire House provides an outstanding education from nursery age through to entry to Senior Schools. Its staff nurture and care for the children throughout their time at the School. Devonshire House has fine premises, with spacious grounds, two onsite AstroTurfs and walled gardens.

Children can join the School’s Nursery, The Oak Tree Nursery, (ages 2½ – 3½), in Pre-Reception or Reception and at later stages, where vacancies arise.

Devonshire House has exceptional results, including for Senior Schools and in their Scholarship examinations. The School has strong links with Senior Schools and ensures every family has good advice about their child’s next school.

Devonshire House is co-educational from 2-11 years at which time the girls take the 11+, while boys can continue the journey in preparation for the 13+.

“The Devonshire House gang are the brightest of buttons, bagging places at some of London’s most competitive senior schools. DH is spread over three Victorian redbricks just off Hampstead High Street, and there’s a cosmopolitan vibe to match – with lengthy waiting lists too. Energy is expended at Lords, the Saracens’ training ground or the much- envied running club on Hampstead Heath. Last year, they raised enough money to build a staff room for their link school in Rwanda. They’re chuffed with their Green Flag eco credentials too – so much so that there are plans for a Forest School. Last term’s performance of ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ was a total show stopper – and, yup, they had ‘real’ rain.”

Broomwood Hall Lower School

Broomwood Hall Lower School has that incredible mix that you find in all great schools: dedicated staff; an inspiring curriculum; beautiful buildings with excellent facilities; an ethos that is rooted in the very best of the tried and tested, whilst looking firmly to the future; but above all, happy children.

Added to this we have innovative and outstanding teaching, a myriad of opportunities for children to try new things, a real sense of community and outstanding pastoral care.  It is a school filled with the the constant buzz of laughter and happiness that comes from children who truly enjoy coming to school. In all this, our goal is to equip children with skills for life, not just the next school. As a pre-prep school, we prepare children for the next stage of their education – whether that’s at 7+ to other schools or at  8+ within the Northwood Schools’ family – either to Broomwood Hall Upper School, (girls), or Northcote Lodge, (boys).

About
Broomwood Hall Lower School

Broomwood Hall Lower School is a pre-prep school for girls and boys aged 4-7 and the first stage of a wonderful prep education with Broomwood through to 13. Times change, but our school’s  philosophy has never wavered:

if a child is happy, they will learn and thrive.

We offer a stimulating, happy and well-rounded education with small class sizes, high teacher/pupil ratios and specialist subject teaching in music and sport.  Our pupils love coming to school.

Thematic learning hooks them in to exciting topics; maths mastery ensures that every child has a fundamental grasp of number to give them the problem solving skills that are so critical in life, and our focus on growth mindset, ensures that every child knows that learning is a process and it’s OK not to get everything right first time.

In the increasingly automated world that our children will face in the years to come, the human skills and values they learn at Broomwood Hall Lower School will matter more than ever. Things like critical thinking, confidence, self-discipline, resilience, organisation, teamwork, creativity, a sense of duty and responsibility; good manners, courtesy and tolerance of others.

Our School Motto exemplifies all that we believe about education:

To do your best to be your best

We are academically ambitious and believe in hard work too, and the satisfaction and sense of achievement that it brings; but never to the exclusion of happiness and of fun, or of a child’s right to be a child.

Broomwood Hall Upper School

Broomwood Hall Upper School provides a forward-thinking, holistic education in an attractive environment, tailored to the needs of the modern world.  We’re big enough to stretch and stimulate, yet small enough to know each girl as an individual.

Over the years we’ve embraced and championed the latest advances in educational thinking and technology.  Yet we hold fast to the things that have always made us special.  We care about traditional values such as good manners and giving each girl a fully rounded education.  We take as much pride in out girls’ successes in art, drama, sport and music as we do in their academic scholarships and prizes – of which we always have a good number each year.

However, we are not a hot-house.  We do not want girls to feel the pressures faced by too many this age.  We’re immensely proud of our pastoral care, which remains our crowning glory. We have a fantastic tutorial system that nurtures and protects, and ensures that there is always an adult, out of the home, who takes an interest – a real interest – in every child’s triumphs, disasters and achievements, and who is always on hand to talk about their problems, real or imagined. This, I believe, is what truly sets us apart.

With wonderful buildings and surroundings, superb and dedicated staff, supportive parents who believe in what we are trying to do, girls who are rewarding and a joy to teach. I personally couldn’t want for anything more. We believe our approach and ethos is the best way to help your daughter realise her potential.  But don’t take my word for it – please come and see us for yourselves and discover the Broomwood difference.

I look forward to welcoming you.

Northcote Lodge

“Welcome to Northcote Lodge.

I hope that you enjoy finding out more about this wonderful school and come and see the magical alchemy of academic excellence, sporting prowess, musical achievement and dramatic performance that makes it so special and successful.  More importantly, I hope that we can convey the vibrancy and happiness that permeates the place; because that, above all is what really matters. Happy boys will enjoy school and do well – and that is what we offer here, in spades.

We combine the very best in modern education within a traditional setting and moral framework to ensure that we educate the ‘whole boy’. This means that alongside academic excellence, we also place great value on manners and respect for others. It is these softer, but essential skills that will equip a boy for life beyond his senior school into a future workplace where collaboration, creativity and innate self-confidence will matter more than ever.”

“Most boys leave us at 13 although some boys leave (and join) at 11 too. Boys regularly win places and scholarships in all subjects to some of the country’s leading public schools – both day and boarding. Above all, we will work with parents to ensure that a boy goes to the school that is right for him.

With 250 boys and no plans to get any bigger, we are small enough for everyone to know each other well and large enough to field teams that can hold their own against much bigger schools. Sport is a large part of a Northcote boy’s life and we are lucky to have the green expanse of Wandsworth common just across the road.  With a long but rewarding school day we can offer boys the opportunity for plenty of extra-curricular opportunities and the benefit of doing all homework at school so that come 6.00pm a boy can go home and relax, knowing his day’s work is done.

So – a wonderful setting, dedicated staff, exemplary pastoral care and a rewarding day provide an excellent preparation for boys as they move on to the next stage in their education and life beyond. If this is something that you feel would be right for your son, please come and meet us.  Please remember that as part of the Northwood Schools family, most boys come to Northcote Lodge from Broomwood Hall Lower School, so a place there guarantees a place with us.  For those looking for a place at 8 from another school, you are most welcome – but do be aware that these places are limited.  Above all, I hope you enjoy learning more about us and we look forward to meeting you and showing you around a school of which we are all extremely proud.”

About
Northcote Lodge

Northcote Lodge is a single-sex prep school for boys aged 8 to 13 who collaborate closely with the girls from Broomwood.

We are a small school, with around 250 boys, and with no plans to grow significantly. This means we are big enough to field winning teams, but small enough to know all of our boys by name.

We are a day school in the heart of London. We adhere to traditional values that are as important today as they’ve ever been, whilst using the latest technological innovations to equip boys with the skills they need for a changing world.

Our motto, ‘Si je puis’ (I will if I can) – exemplifies our desire to give boys the confidence to know that by trying to do their best, they reap the rewards of personal satisfaction and achievement. During his time at Northcote Lodge, every boy should be able to find something he can shine at and thus know the pleasure in achievement – be it in the classroom, on the sports pitch, or in music and drama.

So while we’re rightly proud of our boys’ outstanding successes in Common Entrance, we’re just as proud of their achievements on the sports fields and in the music, art and drama that are embedded into our curriculum. Perhaps more than this, we measure our success, as a school, by the character and manners of our boys. We pride ourselves on being a friendly school that places importance on the traditional values that boys carry with them for life.  Things like kindness, compassion, teamwork and consideration for others – the basics of good manners.  We call this ‘The Northcote Way’.
