The Pointer School

It is my pleasure to welcome you to The Pointer School, an independent co-educational school for boys and girls from 3-11 years of age. Being in the heart of London gives the school a breadth of character and personality that has been at the core of our educational philosophy for over 70 years.

We are very much a Christian school at our foundation. This is the compass we use to guide our pupils through the school, from being kind and compassionate individuals, to fully appreciating the wider world that we live in.

We proudly describe The Pointer School pupils as “self-confident and generous in spirit” and believe they will transition to senior school as young citizens ready to take on the world. We do this by giving the pupils opportunities to grow their self confidence and explore their interests. This starts in the school community, which is proudly international and diverse in makeup. It is evident in the curriculum, where lessons challenge our pupils and provide them with opportunities to take ownership of their learning. Outside of the classroom our extensive programme of extra-curricular clubs allows pupils to find and develop unique talents, from chess to robotics, dance to debating.

Our school is proof that it is possible to be highly academically ambitious without being selective. Children join us and are immediately immersed into a bespoke education with small class sizes (never over 20) and a focus on every child fulfilling their potential. We talk about finding the best senior school for each individual child, rather than simply funnelling them towards the "best" school based purely on league table results. Our pupils move on to a range of excellent independent and Grammar schools across the capital. As many as a quarter of our pupils gain prestigious scholarships for 11 plus entry.

At The Pointer School, we like to describe ourselves as a family. You will find us on the corner of the Heath, housed in Georgian and Victorian buildings with as much character as our school. You are warmly invited to visit, meet the family, and see our wonderful school for yourselves.

About
The Pointer School

Founded in 1950 by Muriel and Dela Pointer, The Pointer School has been educating children in Blackheath for over 70 years. The Pointer sisters ran “ThePointer Dance School” from the 1920s until the founding of the prep school on its current site.

Over the following years, The Pointer School has flourished and grown into a large successful Prep and Pre-Prep school, while still retaining its quirky character and Christian family ethos. The Pointer School pupils are instantly recognisable in their unique purple and green uniforms, and are well-known throughout Blackheath and Greenwich for their cheerful nature and kind hearts. We believe this is attributed to our outstanding of pastoral care.

All adults in our school, from teachers to playground assistants, work to create a loving and fun environment where children are taught to value mistakes and take pride in the accomplishments of themselves and others. Our pupils grow up with a sense of belonging and respect for the diverse world that we live in.

We place a strong emphasis on holistic education, with an extensive wraparound care programme, Holiday Clubs and camps, and over 50 extracurricular clubs, from gardening to coding.

At Pointers, school is so much more than just a classroom.

Devonshire House Preparatory School

Devonshire House offers an intellectual, creative learning environment in which girls and boys of all character and learning profiles can thrive and maximise their potential.

We believe that parents shouldn’t have to choose between academically rigorous and pastorally nurturing schools: their children can have both at Devonshire House.

Strong core subject teaching is combined with a great breadth of study in specialist rooms and taught by expert teachers in their respective fields. A wide range of sports is on offer at our state-of-the-art facility and there is a keen focus on S.T.E.M, the creative arts, languages and the Humanities.

We encourage children to think critically by assimilating different perspectives with an open mindset, able to find nuanced positions as they wrestle with problems. We believe that learning and play represent a symbiotic relationship, one feeding the other.

Children learn as much from studying bugs in our wild area as they do in the classroom. The great outdoors are critical to a child’s development and at Devonshire House, we ensure that the children spend as much time outdoors as possible.

About
Devonshire House Preparatory School

Devonshire House provides an outstanding education from nursery age through to entry to Senior Schools. Its staff nurture and care for the children throughout their time at the School. Devonshire House has fine premises, with spacious grounds, two onsite AstroTurfs and walled gardens.

Children can join the School’s Nursery, The Oak Tree Nursery, (ages 2½ – 3½), in Pre-Reception or Reception and at later stages, where vacancies arise.

Devonshire House has exceptional results, including for Senior Schools and in their Scholarship examinations. The School has strong links with Senior Schools and ensures every family has good advice about their child’s next school.

Devonshire House is co-educational from 2-11 years at which time the girls take the 11+, while boys can continue the journey in preparation for the 13+.

“The Devonshire House gang are the brightest of buttons, bagging places at some of London’s most competitive senior schools. DH is spread over three Victorian redbricks just off Hampstead High Street, and there’s a cosmopolitan vibe to match – with lengthy waiting lists too. Energy is expended at Lords, the Saracens’ training ground or the much- envied running club on Hampstead Heath. Last year, they raised enough money to build a staff room for their link school in Rwanda. They’re chuffed with their Green Flag eco credentials too – so much so that there are plans for a Forest School. Last term’s performance of ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ was a total show stopper – and, yup, they had ‘real’ rain.”

Broomwood Prep – Girls

We provide a forward-thinking holistic education in beautiful grounds between Clapham and Wandsworth Common. Our programmes are tailored to the needs of the modern world. We are big enough to stretch and stimulate, yet small enough to know each girl as an individual.

We embrace latest advances in educational thinking and technology. Broomwood Girls benefit from progressing at their own pace in the classroom, but join with Broomwood Boys for academic extension activities, including joint House competitions, as well as sports, creative workshops and residential trips.

We care about instilling good values, promoting resilience and giving each girl a fully rounded education.  We take pride in the breadth of our successes from our outstanding academic results to achievements in sport, drama, art and music. Our pupils go on to top day or boarding schools at 11 or 13+. We enjoy some of the best prep school results in London, with children winning competitive scholarships for academic studies, music, sport, drama and art.

However, we are not a hot-house.  We do not want girls to feel the pressures faced by too many this age.  We’re immensely proud of our fantastic pastoral care which is key to the academic and personal success of our girls. The journey our pupils are on, allows them to thrive and be successful because they are so well supported. Our tutor system means there is always an adult at school, who takes an interest – a real interest – in every child’s triumphs, disasters and achievements. This, I believe, is what truly sets us apart.

We have wonderful buildings and surroundings with some of the best prep facilities in London, including a fully-fledged DT Suite, specialist science labs and cookery school. We have superb and dedicated staff, supportive parents who believe in what we are trying to do, girls who are rewarding and a joy to teach. I personally couldn’t want for anything more. We believe our approach and ethos is the best way to help your daughter realise her potential.  But don’t take my word for it – please come and see us for yourselves and discover the Broomwood difference.

I look forward to welcoming you.

I hope you will come to see the magical alchemy of our school: we deliver academic excellence alongside myriad sporting, music, drama, and creative opportunities. More often than not, visitors remark on the vibrancy and fun that permeates the place. We are proud of our outstanding academic results but more importantly, we want our boys to have a happy childhood – and that is what we deliver, in spades.

We combine the very best of modern education within a traditional setting and moral framework to educate ‘the whole person’. Broomwood Boys learn at their own pace in the classroom but collaborate with Broomwood Girls for extension and social activities. We have joint house competitions, academic workshops and come together for residential trips and mixed sporting events. Our boys leave us as young men with good values and respect for others. They are self-confident, independent thinkers and team players – essential skills which will stand them in good stead for life at senior school and in the workplace.

Most boys leave us at 13 although some leave (and join) at 11 too. Our results are some of the best in London. Last year, our pupils were awarded 22 scholarships at leading public schools – both day and boarding. We work with parents to ensure that children go to the schools that are right for them.

With 250 boys and no plans to get any bigger we are small enough for everyone to know each other well and large enough to field teams which hold their own against much bigger schools.  Sport is a large part of life at Broomwood, and we are lucky to overlook the green expanse of Wandsworth Common.  School days are long, but rewarding and your son will come home to relax after completing everything (including his homework) at school.

We have dedicated, specialist staff and exemplary pastoral care. If this is something you think might be right for your child, please do come and visit us. Most children join us automatically from Broomwood Pre-Prep, but we do offer places at 7+ and 11+.  Our admissions team are experts in helping you consider all the options and would be delighted to talk to you. We do have some occasional places and look sympathetically at applicants for other Year groups, although this depends on numbers.

I look forward to meeting you all,

About
Broomwood Prep – Boys

Broomwood Prep – Boys is a single-sex prep school for children aged 7 to 13, which collaborates closely with the girls from Broomwood. We are a day school in the heart of London. Our motto: BeYourBEST, exemplifies our desire to give boys the confidence to know that by trying to do their best, they reap the rewards of personal satisfaction and achievement. During his time at Broomwood, every boy should be able to find something he can shine at and thus know the pleasure in achievement – be it in the classroom, on the sports pitch, or in music and drama.

So, while we’re rightly proud of our boys’ outstanding successes in senior school assessments, scholarship applications and other examinations, we’re just as proud of their achievements on the sports fields and in the music, art and drama that are embedded into our curriculum. Perhaps more than this, we measure our success, as a school, by the character and manners of our boys. We pride ourselves on being a friendly school that places importance on the traditional values that boys carry with them for life.  Things like kindness, compassion, teamwork and consideration for others – the basics of good manners.

Throughout my career, I have been wholly committed to ensuring that children get the very best educational experiences possible. I want them to love coming to school and to love learning. It is the most enormous privilege to be able make a positive impact on them as they lay foundations, develop values and form meaningful friendships that will set them up for the next stage in their lives. That drive, to give children at Eaton House Schools the most wonderful prep school years, will guide and motivate my decisions.

Reflecting on my career and philosophy, I am always looking for ways in which children can glimpse what the wider world can offer them. It is so important that the children hear from people who have ‘made a difference’ so that the early seeds of ‘I can make a difference’ begin to take root. I have enjoyed forming excellent, positive relationships with neighbouring primary schools whether by inviting the children to some events, allowing them to use facilities for their sports days or for older pupils to spend time with the children, reading, doing sports or helping with maths, as part of their leadership programme.

In my previous role as Head of Newton Prep, I hosted, in liaison with a local state primary school Head, a conference: ‘Empowering Women in Educational Leadership.’ Women from both sectors joined us to explore the theme of leadership. Nicky Morgan, then Secretary State for Education attended, as did Dame Doreen Lawrence and Shami Chakrabarti. Another example of meaningful collaboration with the state sector was when the Dalai Lama and Bishop Rowan Williams came to Newton Prep as part of the ‘Inspiring Dialogue’ conference. Children from a range of schools came to share what they believed they wanted their world to look like.

I am ambitious for the children at Eaton House Schools. I want them to ‘think big’ and take away some fantastic experiences from their prep school days. I strongly support the performing arts and what this can bring into children’s lives. I believe we need to be proud of the breadth and depth of the experiences our children can enjoy at school.

Outside school, I have recently been appointed a Governor at Brighton College. The theatre, reading and music give me great pleasure and I recently embarked on learning to play the piano – a joyful experience and an excellent reminder of what it feels like to be a ‘learner’.

Hampton Court House School

Hampton Court House is a place of magic, wonder and inspiration, where the children are at the heart of everything we do. As Head, I am unashamedly and unapologetically idealistic about the power of education to transform young people, and HCH is the perfect environment for this to happen. Walking through the gates at HCH transports our children to a special place where they can thrive and flourish, where they are respected and valued as independent and autonomous individuals, and where they are known and deeply cared for by every member of staff. Our children are empowered, enabled, and treasured.

Our ethos and vision focuses on sparking creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking through an exciting and progressive curriculum facilitated by passionate subject specialists who have chosen to teach because they love their subject and are lifelong learners in themselves, but also because they wish to share this knowledge with young people. As well as being a place that buzzes with scholarship and academic enquiry, we also celebrate experiential learning and all of the so-called ‘soft-skills’ learned through the performing and expressive arts, sport, and activities where our children can be challenged outside of their comfort zone, celebrated for their intrinsic passions and skills, and where they can learn so much about who they are and what makes them tick.

Most importantly, however, HCH prioritises the mental health and wellbeing of each and every member of our community; pastoral care is the golden thread that runs through everything we do. Our children are nourished and nurtured as we help them navigate their way through developing their sense of self. Our guiding principles are kindness, respect and compassion for others and this is reflected in our ‘inner curriculum’ based on empathy, emotional literacy, and emotional intelligence. We want our children to be happy, confident, and understand themselves, but also understand and care for those around them. It is this combination that will help them make the world a better place.

There are so many other attributes that make HCH such a special school, whether that is our French immersion programme and focus on languages, ballet provision, informal dress code, late Sixth Form start, or how all staff are referred to by their first name. Our beautiful buildings and garden provide our students with the physical space to run, play, imagine and enjoy the freedom and other wondrous aspects of being young. HCH is unique and distinct, and we are proud to be so because we know how motivating, inspiring and nurturing this is for the young people in our care and how it helps them achieve their highest potential.

I cannot wait to welcome you to the school so you can see the magic, vibrancy, and collective joy of HCH first-hand.

It is important to us that children enjoy being here and look forward to coming to school. We wish to lay the foundations of a lifelong love of learning.

We believe that children need some (guided) freedom in order to develop their own style with taste and discretion. Pupils and staff have mutual respect for each other. The staff, including the Principal, are addressed by their first names. Whilst there is a dress code, there is no uniform.

About
Hampton Court House School

Hampton Court House is an ‘all through’ school teaching pupils aged 2–18. Some students choose to move on after 11+ in Year 6 or through Common Entrance or Scholarship papers in Year 8. But most pupils elect to stay on to GCSE in Year 11 and A-levels in the sixth form.

The Nursery and Reception classes provide a highly stimulating and welcoming environment for children to learn through interaction with each other and adults. They learn through play with songs and games and through the enthusiasm of their teachers.

Children hear spoken French around them each day, which prepares them for the Lower Years (Years 1–4) which is a fully bilingual environment. After this, in Year 6, all pupils sit internal 11+ examinations, and 13+ examinations in Year 8 in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, French, Spanish, Mandarin, and Latin. In the Upper Years, students will make their own decisions that will shape their future and can select specialisms from a wide range of subjects.

Hampton Court is a co-educational all-through school.
